Our History

Throughout the course of history, the citizens of every great city had to contend with the threat of fires. Despite this constant threat, firefighting remained rudimentary for centuries, with the fire bucket being the predominant tool to provide a means of extinguishment.

When the town watchman spotted a fire, he would raise the alarm, drawing the city’s citizens from their homes and into the city streets. Armed with their families’ collection of buckets, long lines would be formed from the nearest water source to the location of the fire. Each citizen would fill and pass buckets from one to the other until the bucket of water reached the fire.

When the fire was extinguished, the buckets would be left scattered in the streets until they could be collected by their owners. In order to identify which house they belonged to, the fire buckets were traditionally decorated with the family’s coat of arms. It was often a point of pride for a family to have participated in the extinguishment of a fire.
